MEDIAINVESTIGASIMABES.CO.ID | Sugapa Intan Jaya, MediaHabema – The actions of suspected members of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) once again caused security disruptions in the Papua region. This time, their activities took place in Intan Jaya Regency, specifically in Sugapa District. The incident occurred on Monday, December 9, 2024, in Holomama Village, Sugapa District, resulting in the death of one armed group member.

The incident began when the Satgas Yonif 509/BY Kostrad team detected suspicious activity within their monitoring area. After increasing patrols and conducting a sweep, the team was attacked by the armed group. The Satgas soldiers quickly responded to the attack and managed to secure the situation. During the sweep, one member of the group was found deceased. The body was then evacuated to the Satgas Post for identification. As part of their commitment to humanitarian values, the Satgas handed over the body to the family through coordination with the Sugapa Community Health Center (Puskesmas). The handover was witnessed by several regional officials, including the Regional Secretary of Intan Jaya Regency, the Head of the Village Community Empowerment Office, the Danramil, and officers from the Intan Jaya Police.

Commander of Satgas Yonif 509/BY Kostrad, Lieutenant Colonel Infantry Dian Dessiawan Setyadi, emphasized that the operation had been conducted with a humanistic approach while adhering to the Rules of Engagement. “We acted to ensure the safety of the community and to protect the region from threats posed by armed groups,” he stated.

“We will continue to ensure security in Papua and provide a sense of safety for the community. The Satgas will also remain vigilant against potential threats,” added HABEMA Commander, Brigadier General TNI Lucky Avianto, following the incident.
